It is an assured parlay against the arduous journey that reveals not only the natural spectrum of the Sham Valley but discourses the ancient culture of the Tibetan Buddhism Kargyu section. The Lamayuru Chilling Trek, which is an easy to moderate trek in the Ladakh region, winds from the colourful Sham Valley passing through ancient monasteries and remote hamlets filling in travellers’ mind with the traditions of a bygone era to the lofty height offering spectacular view of the Zanskar Valley.
The Lamayuru Chilling Trek often entices Buddhist pilgrims from different corners of the world. It splits from the rugged tracks to the beautiful Lamayuru Monastery, which is said to be one of the oldest monasteries, built in the 10th century and passing through remote hamlets like Shilla, Phenjilla, Hinju and Sumda Chenmo to Chilling. This part of the trekking trail in Ladakh region offers the breathtaking view of the Photoksar Peak after crossing the Sumda Chenmo village and Stok and Karakoram Range after passing through the Kongskil La at 4900 meters. Nonetheless the amazing and the wild hues of the Edelweiss flower secluded within the barren hillocks is beyond the contrasting landscape.
Nights under the star glittered sky and days on nature’s lap the journey to Chilling provides a doorway to one of the popular winter treks in Ladakh region, the Frozen River Trek. During the season of Lamayuru Chilling Trek, June to September, the untamed Zanskar River adds on another adventure activity, River Rafting on the Zanskar River.
