Overview
The best way to experience the glorious heritage of the kingdom of Tipu Sultan is to take a tour of the island of Srirangapatnam in an open jeep. The 4 hour guided trip through the fort city of the 'Tiger of Mysore' will provide you a glimpse of how the Anglo-Mysorean wars were plotted and fought. You will also get a sneak peek at the colonial connections of the city and its linkages with the American and French revolutions. The experience can be undertaken anytime during the day.
Visit places that narrate a story. Colonel Bailey Dungeon is where Colonel Bailey passed away in the 18thcentury. It is said that at the time of siege of Srirangapatna, one cannon rolled back, cut the ceiling and fell into the dungeon. It still lies there today. Tour the Fort where Tippu launched his attack against the British. Inside this fort is a mosque and the Ranganathaswamy Temple. On the outside, you have the tomb of Tippu, the Gumbaz. Also visit the Obelisk, where Tipu Sultan died, while trying to prevent a British soldier from pulling out his legendary sword from its scabbard.
